St Cuthbert's Garden Village Carlisle
A new Carlisle Southern Link Road would provide a vital east-west connection for the City and would support the delivery of St Cuthbert's Garden Village.
In order to support the delivery of St Cuthbert’s Garden Village, Cumbria County Council are in the early stages of exploring the possibility of a southern link road for Carlisle. A Carlisle Southern Link Road would provide a high quality road link south of Carlisle, connecting Junction 42 of the M6 to the A595 at Peter Lane.
Cumbria County Council are currently developing the scheme for the Carlisle Southern Link Road. A preferred route has been selected, following a period of consultation in Spring 2018. A consultation feedback report is available on the County Council's website.
On 14 February 2019, the Government announced that through the Housing Infrastructure Fund, £102million will be invested in Carlisle for development of the Carlisle Southern Link Road. In July 2020, an additional £32million was included as part of the Government's investment in Carlisle and the CSLR, bringing the total amount of funding through the Housing Infrastructure Fund to £134million.
A planning application for the road was approved by Cumbria County Council in October 2020.. The planning application can be viewed online at planning.cumbria.gov.uk under Planning Application Reference: 1/19/9012.
Construction work is planned to start in 2022 with completion anticipated for 2024. More information is available at: www.cumbria.gov.uk/cslr
